With your phone's own voices — the better the voices you install, the better the app sounds.
The app says the words in one voice and the example sentences in another, both of the variant you are learning, and the meanings in a voice of your own language. It takes the best voices installed on your phone.
On iPhone a voice is Premium, Enhanced or basic, and the app takes the best you have among the countries that fit your variant; when two are equally good, it keeps to the first country on its list. Latin-American Spanish, for example, is spoken with Mexican and Colombian voices, Mexican first.
Better voices are free: Settings › Accessibility › Read & Speak › Voices (on iOS 17: Spoken Content › Voices), or search Settings for «Voices». Choose the language and download an Enhanced or Premium voice. If your iPhone is using basic voices, the home screen tells you which ones are still needed.
On Android the app uses the voices of your phone's text-to-speech service for your variant.
