The short version
- No ads, no tracking across other apps or websites (so a browser’s Do Not Track signal changes nothing here), and we do not sell your data.
- Without an account, your words and progress stay on your phone.
- Your voice is never sent to us. Speech is recognised by your phone's own speech service.
- A photo or a pasted list is read by a third-party AI only after you agree — and we do not keep it.
- You can delete your account and its data at any time, in the app or on this site.
Who we are
Word Gallery is made by Andrey Teplyakov (“we”, “us”). For anything about your data, write to support@contrastlab.net.
What we collect, and why
If you use the app without an account
Your words, progress and settings are stored on your phone only. To download the dictionary and the paintings, the app makes ordinary web requests; like any web request, they carry technical data such as your IP address.
If you create an account
- Account: your email address, and a display name if you give one. Your password is handled by our sign-in service (Amazon Cognito); we never see it.
- Learning data: for each word you study, its memory state — how well you know it and when it comes back; your answer history — which word, when, in which direction, how long you took and the grade it got; your settings and points. We use it to keep your progress across phones and to plan your reviews. It contains no recordings and no transcripts of what you said.
If you add your own words
- Photos and pasted lists are sent to Anthropic’s AI to be read, only after you agree. We do not store the photo or the text; we keep a count of readings for the daily limit. You can turn this off in Settings › Privacy — then lists are read on your phone.
- Words we make for you: the word, linked to your account until it is ready. A finished word joins the shared collection without your name.
If you write to us
Your email and what you send, to answer you.
Your voice
The app listens through your phone’s speech recognition: Apple’s on iPhone, the phone’s speech service on Android (usually Google’s). With a connection, your phone may send the audio to that service to be recognised, under Apple’s or Google’s privacy policy; without one, it is recognised on the phone. The app does not record or keep audio and sends none to us.
Who else processes your data
- Amazon Web Services — stores the data and runs our servers and sign-in, in the United States.
- Anthropic — reads photos and pasted lists you choose to send; helps prepare words we make. It does not train its models on them.
- OpenAI — paints the pictures of words we make; it receives the word, not your data, and does not train its models on it.
- Apple and Google — speech recognition (above), and App Store and Google Play purchases. We never see your card. On Android, Google’s ML Kit reads lists on your phone and sends Google technical diagnostics (device model, system and app version, performance data) — never the photo or the list.
- RevenueCat — tells the app whether your Premium subscription is active; it receives your purchase records and an account identifier.
We share data with these providers only for the purposes above, and only with providers whose terms give your data the same or equal protection as this policy. We do not sell or rent your data, and we do not use it for advertising.
How long we keep it
- Account and learning data: while you have an account. When you delete it, it is deleted from our servers at once; our database backups keep a copy for up to 35 days.
- Server logs: 30 days.
- Support emails: as long as needed to help you.
Deleting your data, and your other rights
Delete your account in the app (home screen › your account icon › Delete account) or on the Delete your account page. You can also ask us to tell you what we hold about you, to correct it, or to send you a copy — write to support@contrastlab.net. You can withdraw your agreement to AI reading at any time in Settings › Privacy.
In the EU and the UK. We use your data to give you the service you ask for — your account and progress, and reading a photo or list you send after you agree — and server logs to keep the service safe. You can also ask us to restrict or stop using your data, and you can complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
Word Gallery is not meant for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child under 13 has given us data, write to us and we will delete it.
Security and where data is stored
Data travels encrypted between the app and our servers and is stored with Amazon Web Services in the United States, with access limited to what the service needs.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we will update the date above, and tell you in the app before an important change applies.
